Backyard boys: “You don’t need a million dollars to make something with quality,” says Matt Winter. “You need skill.” In a 1930s Quonset hut behind their house, Matt and his brother, Daniel, craft accessories out of latigo leather, canvas, and vintage medallions. The hut is also an office and a by-appointment shop for their unisex Winter Brothers collection. “We get everyone from 70-year-old men wanting wallets to 18-year-old girls and their mothers requesting bags,” says Daniel. Family affair: Granddad started the menswear company Lancer of California, Dad headed that enterprise for a time and taught the boys how to make deerskin knife sheathes, and Mom’s jewelry company, Kimme Winter Design, inspired their use of metal trim. “That old world-western frontier style is what we pay homage to,” says Daniel. Money matters: Daniel paints window signs for bars. Matt sells vintage bikes and other display pieces to stores. The side jobs float their brand, whose pieces cap at $1,200 for a gold leaf-monogrammed computer bag. » Available at Coutula, 1204 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, 310-581-8010.
