Import/export: In the 1980s, Elaine Kim introduced Melrose shoppers to European labels like Ann Demeulemeester and Costume National at her boutique, Ecru. In the next decade she launched her own line, Product, which she sold at Barneys New York and her new store, also called Product, on Robertson. Madonna and Kate Moss wore pieces from the collection, which consisted of such essentials as jersey slip dresses and stretch pants. Spinning a cocoon: In 2000, the Korean-born Kim sold Product and took an eight-year break to raise her two children. “Because of the time spent away from fashion, I can be more bold about breaking away from what I did. There’s still a lot I want to say.” Kim 2.0: She has introduced a high-end line that bears her name, which debuts in November. It pairs sculptural shapes and cuts with fabrics like foiled denim chambray, jacquard, and silk chiffon with Lycra. Bold strokes: Inspired by art and architecture, Kim believes fashion needs a stronger silhouette. “We’ve passed through this era of generic.” » 323-937-0355 or elainekim.com.
