Is Abbot Kinney The Coolest Block in America?
GQ Magazine sent up its hipness bat signal Saturday, inviting east siders to rediscover Abbot Kinney, or as the magazine calls it, “the coolest block in America.” (We call it The New Abbot Kinney in this recent street guide.) The fashionable and delicious strip of stores selling everything from raw juices to raw denim gave it it’s best effort, setting up food trucks, special discounts, and occasional GQ sponsored events, such as a street fashion photo shoot that will likely appear in an upcoming issue of the magazine. Event goers didn’t seem fazed when a small group of locals exercised their right to protest what they saw as GQ assisting in Venice’s gentrification. They gathered on Abbot Kinney, a street named after a turn-of-the-century developer that sought to bring arts, culture and higher living standards to the area, or, in other words, gentrify Venice.
While the festivities (and protests) are over, those just catching wind of the event now aren’t out of luck. With Black Friday and the holiday shopping season bearing upon us, these sales aren’t likely to be going anywhere. And as far as menswear goes, there are a few shops definitely worth the trip. Make sure you swing by Civilianaire, Scotch & Soda, and Roots, a brand new boutique filled with quality leather boots and bags and trendy varsity jackets.
