Two New Food Events to Look Forward to This Year
Bite Night and Taste America hit the L.A. food scene
While we finish digesting the memories of last weekend’s Le Fooding, we can already start looking forward the rest of this year’s food events. There will be taco truck festivals, wine tastings, pie tastings and events for a good cause. In addition, here are two new ones to look forward to:
On May 21, the Los Angeles Times hosts a day of eating with its newest restaurant critic, Jonathan Gold. Remember when Mr. Gold hosted The Gold Standard event at the LA Weekly? This is kind of like that, except that it’s called Bite Nite. Much as he did at the Weekly, the self-proclaimed ‘belly of Los Angeles’ will pick his favorite restauranst in L.A., except instead of 99, he’ll pick 101. These will be featured in a special LAT issue to hit newstands on May 23. In advance of the issue’s release, Bite Nite will offer guests tastes of some of Gold’s picks, including Alma, Chichen Itza, Corazon y Miel, Cut, Guelaguetza, Hart & Hunter, Jitlada, Ink, La Casita Mexicana, Mozza, and Sqirl. Tickets are going for $101 a pop and are only available to LAT members.
The James Beard Foundation is getting ready to announce this year’s award winners (our own Dine Editor and Restaurant Critic are in attendance), but they’ve also just announced a new multi-city food tour that’s going to hit L.A. later this year. After the heat of the summer has worn off, on October 10 and 11, the foundation will bring Taste America to L.A. The event is part of a 10-city, five weekend tour that will travel across the U.S. just as wine vines ripen. Though the L.A. itinerary has not yet been locked down, James Beard Foundation President Susan Ungaro promises us “culinary all-stars” (Rick Bayless is rumored to be coming to town) and our own Suzanne Goin. The weekend starts off with a Friday night dinner to benefit the James Beard Foundation as well as a local, as yet unconfirmed charity. A city full of events at Sur la Table locations and on the streets follows on Saturday the 11th. Stay tuned for more details.
