The Top 20 Restaurants We Lost in 2013

The ones we’ll miss most.

Los Angeles gained hundreds of new restaurants in 2013, but many of our old favorites shut their doors this year. Here, a look back at the ones we lost.

PAPAYA KING
Date of closure: February 1
What we miss: The smell that vaguely reminded us of New York’s Upper East Side.

HOF’S HUT
Date of closure: February 28
What we miss: We lost the oldest—51-years-old, to be exact—location of Hof’s, but it’s not the last. There are five other Hof’s in SoCal.

PLAYA
Date of closure: March 6
What we miss: Chef John Sedlar’s fusion tacos.

EVA
Date of closure: March 15
What we miss: Chef Mark Gold’s cooking. His project just after Eva, Chez Soi, was short lived. Eva was one of our best new restaurants of 2009.

JIN PATISSERIE
Date of closure: March 24
What we miss: The dainty pastries and bags of melt-in-your-mouth cookies from the former Abbot Kinney tea room. It’s now a Kreation Juicery and lacks all of the charm that pastry chef Kristy Choo brought to the location.

JERRY’S FAMOUS DELI
Date of closure: May 19
What we miss: The late night eats.

THE FOUNDRY on Melrose
Date of closure: May 19
What we miss: Chef Eric Greenspan’s cooking. He’s been teasing us with news of a forthcoming grilled cheese project for nearly three years.

EMPRESS PAVILLION
Date of closure: June 2
What we miss: For nearly 25 years, it was a go-to dim sum spot in Chinatown.

MIRABELLE
Date of closure: June 6
What we miss: The chocolate souffle was still good, even after 43 years.

THE PALMS BAR
Date of closure: June 9
What we miss: The scene.

NORM’S Santa Monica
Date of closure: July 20
What we miss: The sign. It’s been there for 50 years.

BLT STEAK
Date of closure: July 30
What we miss: The massive, steaming popovers.

LOLA’S
Date of closure: September 8
What we miss: The throwback drinks.

THE PARISH
Date of closure: September 30
What we miss: Brooke Mosley’s pastries.

IRV’S BURGERS
Date of closure: September 30
What we miss: Though there are rumors that Irv’s may come back, we’re already missing the burgers and fries and stools on the sidewalk.

THE BUCKET
Date of closure: October 3
What we miss: The burgers, which they served in Eagle Rock for the past 78 years.

BIERBEISL
Date of closure: November 9
What we miss: Though chef Bernhard Mairinger plans to bring his award-winning (and one of our best new restaurants of 2012) BierBeisl back in mid-2014, we’re missing the schnitzel and schnapps until then.

THE OMELETTE PARLOR
Date of closure: December 18
What we miss: The fluffy omelettes.

EL CONQUISTADOR
Date of closure: December 22
What we miss: The colorful crowd and big drinks.

THE SPICE TABLE
Date of closure: December 31
What we’ll miss: Chef Bryant Ng’s cooking, though we’re comforting ourselves with the fact that he’s returning to a new kitchen in 2014.

How could you forget Alex’s Donuts on Franklin & Argyle in Hollywood?!? BEST DONUTS in LA!!!

Wolf’s Burgers on Lake in Pasadena. I miss Mimi and their fabulous burger bar, where you could put on your own toppings…they even gave you a choice between chopped or sliced onions, and you could load on as many as you wanted.
