Tex-Mex Invasion: The Breakfast Tacos are Coming!
Flour tortillas—they’re not so bad.
New Yorkers whine about not being able to find decent bagels and pizza-by-the-slice here in the City of Angels. Chicagoans miss their deep-dish pizza and loaded hot dogs. Meanwhile, many an Austinite has bemoaned the great breakfast taco vacuum that is Los Angeles.
Well, that’s all about to change, amigos. Bar Amá by chef Josef Centeno has switched their puffy taco (it’s still available off menu) to breakfast tacos served in a very good flour tortilla, and given a flavor overdrive from the housemade “bus driver” hot sauce, featuring 15 chiles.
They come in potato and egg, sausage and egg, bean and cheese, and carne guisada. Though Centeno won’t go as far as putting yellow cheese and iceburg lettuce on his puffy taco, the breakfast tacos are the stuff of his San Antonio roots.
Up next: Bludso’s Bar and Que, which will be rolling out—hopefully by hand—Texas-style breakfast tacos in the coming weeks.
There’s more to come, and L.A. could use some more flour tortillas, but for the moment, we’ve at least got a pair of breakfast taco options. And that sure is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
