Tar Pit

This art deco-inspired nook is a bar for grown-ups. That means throwback cocktails by mixology maven Audrey Saunders and old-timey classics from Campanile chef-owner Mark Peel. Dishes like steak Diane, shrimp Louis, pickled deviled eggs, and wild boar meatballs with spongy spaetzle hark back to the golden age of Hollywood. We were hoping for Campanile quality. Instead the dishes work best when soaking up boozy concoctions such as the Jamaican Firefly (a play on a Dark and Stormy) and the Agave Bravo (a bracing mix of tequila, mescal, bitters, and grapefruit). » 609 N. La Brea Ave., L.A. (323-965-1300 or tarpitbar.com). D nightly. Full bar. American  $$
