Can you believe it? 2011 is nearly in the books. No need to get weepy-eyed. Plenty of L.A.’s restaurants are toasting to the year that was and looking forward to a tremendous 2012 (assuming that whole end-of-the-world thing is all hype). Free champagne helps the festive mood at most places, as will performers on stilts dazzling the crowd at one downtown rooftop French bistro. May old acquaintance beeeee forgot….

Akasha

 

Bali is Chef Akasha Richmond’s inspiration for the New Year’s Eve menu at her Culver City restaurant. A four-course meal will be offered at two times. The latter seating will also include live music humming from the George Gilliam Band. A few menu highlights include lime-grilled prawns with green papaya, cherry tomatoes, and a mango blossom honey dressing; and short ribs rending with sambal potatoes and bok choy. You can nibble on Balinese pickles and kaffir lime cashews while the food cooks.

Diners can choose from two seatings to ring in 2012. Chef Daniel Roberts has crafted a menu that showcases the seaside spot’s seafood focus such as lobster Thermidor and barramundi with Brussels sprouts, cippolini onions, pomme dauphine and pomegranate; but also suits beef aficionados with a Prime center-cut rib eye with braised beef ravioli, garlic spinach and an Amarone béarnaise.

Casa del Mar 

The Santa Monica hotel is ready to party like it’s, well, 2012. Executive chef Jason Bowlin has crafted menus for two seatings. What’s more, the group Full Spectrum will perform throughout the night in the Lobby Lounge ($40 admission). The early menu includes oysters on the half shell, foie gras terrine, grilled filet mignon with lobster crushed potatoes, and Maine lobster with pumpkin risotto and Moroccan curry. Diners for the second seating will be treated to black truffle tortellini, maple-roasted game hens with Tuscan  kale, striped bass with melted leeks and a Meyer lemon tart with raspberries and crème fraiche.

Fig + Olive

 

Executive chef Pascal Lorange and team will be up to their arms in figs, which will appear in more than a few dishes for the night’s meal. The four-course feast will precede a night of dancing. Guests can fuel up on grilled langoustine with artichoke tapenade and smoked pimenton olive oil; fig foie gras terrine with pear chutney; a roasted butternut squash cappuccino; striped bass with charmoula, cumin and celery root puree emulsion; and grilled filet mignon with sautéed black trumpet mushrooms, gratin dauphinois and fig chutney. Save room for the desserts, which include a champagne mousse with raspberry sorbet. Fig + Olive will also be open New Year’s Day for dinner at 6 p.m.

Locanda del Lago 

Got plans for New Year’s Eve? Well, if the final day of 2011 is booked but you still want to try Locanda del Lago’s festive meal, don’t fret. The Santa Monica northern Italian spot will offer a five-course feast on both December 31 and January 1, along with plenty of champagne, Prosecco, even dancing and a DJ. Executive chef Gianfranco Minuz’s menu includes  Muscovy duck pâté with white truffles and white asparagus and Fontina fonduta, sea bass tortelli in seafood-tomato bouillabaisse, roast leg of lamb with spiced blueberry compote, and dark chocolate mousse with Guanduja hazelnut cake. After all that food, busting a move on the dance floor would be a good idea. New Year’s Eve will also include $25 bottles of Pommery Pop Splits. Diners can choose off a la carte menus on both days.

It’s New Year’s Eve, so you want to have options. In that spirit, Ombra is offering three seatings to raise a glass for the final day of 2011 and first few hours of 2012. The 5 and 7 p.m. seatings will have four-course meals while the 9 p.m. has a six-course dinner. The menu includes cavatelli with Dungeness crab, sweet onions and arugula; cream of cauliflower soup with truffle “caviar”; and branzino filet with roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts with salmoriglio sauce. Reservations are required for all seatings and jackets are preferred.

Barbecue and champagne might not appear like they were meant for one another, but when you pair them with an open-air setting within a 130-acre Malibu ranch, suddenly the two can become best friends. Toast the final day of 2011 with a five-course feast that includes lobster ravioli with a sweet corn sauce, and wild Alaskan salmon with roasted endive and carrot sauce. For New Year’s Day, diners can nosh on a brunch buffet that features a hash brown station for the spud fans, a bellini bar and blueberry French toast to name a few.

Special New Year’s bites include lobster orrecchiette gratin with sea urchin; and lamb chops with herb polenta and tomato-pine nut gremolata.

The ball in New York might drop, but that’s hardly the case at Sean MacPherson and Jared Meisler’s West Hollywood Italian post. The place is ready to welcome diners with a four-course prix-fixe dinner. Customers may also select a la carte from the menu, which includes lobster with sea urchin and porcini mushrooms for an antipasti; scallop ravioli with caviar and pistachio semifreddo to top off the night, along with that glass of bubbly.

To toast the new year, diners will enjoy a pisco sour shot halfway into their six-course, family-style meal. Ricardo Zarate’s Peruvian spot on Pico Boulevard will be serving traditional shrimp chowder, croqueta de sangrecita (it’s just fun to say), fried morcilla (Spanish blood sausage)) with mustard dressing, octopus tiradito with a citrus-olive dressing and camarones ala parrilla or grilled black tiger prawns with homemade pasta. Dessert is a surprise. A live salsa band will help get your groove on after 10 p.m. So much to toast! A credit card is required for booking.

A Japanese café serving Mexican food? Whatever the reason, the menu sounds yummy and suitable to fuel up after a night of reveling. The Culver City café will open its doors on New Year’s Day and serve housemade Soju margaritas and Mexican fare such as huevos rancheros, chilaquiles with rib eye, and chiles nogadas (poblanos stuffed with brown rice, peach, pear, tomato, almonds, and raisins) with a walnut sauce. Guests can browse the 10,000 square-foot art exhibit space and retail shop and listen to DJ Kit Kaboom.

Savory 

 

Yay, we’re stoked to find a party that includes the kids. Savory restaurant in Malibu will host a fun night of dancing, tray-passed hors d’oeuvres, and a Laser light show, for this semi-formal fêté. A portion of proceeds from admission and childcare will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu, which is offering babysitting for $20 per child 5 and older. The kids will be treated to pizza and Martinelli’s sparkling cider. For the adults, there will be a complementary entrance cocktail, a champagne toast at midnight, and party favors. Dress in your best duds for this one.

A jolt of spicy tuna or a kobe beef potsticker might just be the break from heavy comfort food that’s needed this time of year.
