Hot Stuff: Take a Free Tour of Irwindale’s Sriracha Factory
See how the famous rooster sauce is made during the all-important chili crushing season
Remember when the city of Irwindale threatened to shutdown Sriracha production indefinitely? That was a close one.
Fortunately, now that the legal fires threatening Huy Fong Foods have been extinguished, the factory is back in full swing for the start of its 16-week jalapeño grinding season, in which over 58,000 tons of peppers are crushed and fermented to produce the upcoming year’s supply of Sriracha.
And, lucky you, Huy Fong is offering free public tours (they’ve been doing so since February, but this time of year is when things get interesting) so that Sriracha fans can observe the spellbinding, pepper-crushing, sauce-making process in its entirely.
They’ll kick off the season with a special open house on August 22 and 23, where guests can tour the facility and sample some Sriracha-centric appetizers. If you’re one of the first 200 guests each day, you’ll also receive some free rooster sauce-themed goodies.
And why not visit The Rooster Room afterward, the factory’s new gift shop which specializes in Sriracha-related merchandise. It’s sure to fire up the whole family.
Visit signupgenius.com to RSVP for the August 22 and 23 events, or call 626-286-8328 to schedule a tour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
