In honor of National Doughnut Day (today!), BLD is pairing pastry chef Mariah Swan’s famous cruller creations with premium bourbon. We’re talking salted caramel-glazed with toasted almonds, cinnamon marshmallows, and chocolate sauce alongside a glass of Elijah Craig 12-year. More information.
California Grub, Grapes & Grain at The Chandelier Room — 6/7
This Saturday marks the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes horse race. Santa Anita Park’s Chandelier Room is celebrating with a watching party and meal hosted by chef Christian Page (formerly of Short Order) and Osteria Mozza’s previous chef de cuisine, Christopher Feldmeier. Joining them is another Mozza alum, former GM David Rosoff, who has curated the wines, as well as Nathan Oliver (the Vagrancy Project, Harvard & Stone) who will be mixing cocktails while we cheer on California Chrome. Filipino Weekend at EscaLA — 6/7-8
Chef Chris Oh of EscaLA is joining forces with New York hot spots Maharlika Filipino Moderno and Jeepney Filipino Gastropub to bring more Filipino cuisine to Angeleno bellies. The weekend’s festivities include a brunch with options ranging from mango-stuffed French toast to tortang talong (a charred eggplant and crab meat frittata), as well as a dinnertime feast where diners choose between a traditional family-style Kamayan dinner and a separate prix-fixe Filipino meal.More information.
Japanese Gourmet Festival in Torrance — 6/7-8
Experience more than 25 Japanese food vendors who will be cooking up specialty dishes from all regions of Japan at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. There’ll be three styles of ramen including the salty Sapporo miso ramen from Hokkaido, crispy skewers of kushiage from Osaka, and much more. Tickets and more information.
BBQ, Beer, and Music at Little Beast — 6/8
Eagle Rock’s Little Beast celebrates its one-year anniversary Sunday afternoon with a special $30 barbecue menu, $1 local draft beers, and tunes by old-timey folk band Triple Chicken Foot. Chef Sean Lowenthal’s menu includes barbecued pork shoulder with cheddar and chive biscuits and, for dessert, charred pineapple-topped shortcake. More information.
Cooking for a Cure at Plan Check Fairfax — 6/8
Benefiting pancreatic cancer research, Cooking for a Cure is a massive food fest and fundraiser that includes specialty cocktails, beer and wine, and a silent auction. This year’s event is hosted by Plan Check Kitchen + Bar on Fairfax and features six chefs, including Bernhard Mairinger (BierBeisl), Josef Centeno (Orsa & Winston), and Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (Animal).
