There's a New Full-Time Culinary School in Town
The New School of Cooking welcomes two new full-time programs
Located in Culver City’s art district, the New School of Cooking is a playground for culinary enthusiasts looking to expand their repertoire or home chefs who want to impress with some fancy new dishes. For the past 14 years, the little culinary school has offered individual classes as well as series covering everything from knife skills to donut making, and this summer, the course list is expanding.
The New School of Cooking is now offering two full-time professional programs. In anticipation of the launch of its new Advanced Professional Culinary Arts and Advanced Professional Culinary Pastry Arts programs, the school has been hosting a series of mini open houses every Monday in July.
We were invited to attend last night’s showcase, which took place in one of the school’s two fully-stocked kitchens. Owner Chris Becker opened the showcase with a brief explanation of the new courses, each of which will admit only 16 students. Afterwards, students mingled and sipped on coffee as New School instructor and former chef de cuisine at Aventine, Kristyne Starling, demonstrated how to make her signature butterscotch panna cotta.
The New School’s final showcase is next Monday, July 29, and those who have ever considered going to culinary school are strongly encouraged to attend. Even if it doesn’t light your fire for chef stardom (though it did ours), you may get some panna cotta out of the deal.
