Last Minute Gift Guide: New Local, Seasonal Beers

These limited edition bottles make great gifts for beer geeks

Still left without a holiday gift for the craft beer lover(s) in your life? Last week, we shared a handy dandy little map that highlighted some of L.A.’s best bottle shops, but here are a few limited edition, seasonal beers you may want to keep your eyes out for, with little bonus tips to boot!

Eagle Rock Brewery | Returning to Eagle Rock’s lineup is their seasonal holiday release: Jubilee. Brewed in the style of an old ale, with spices added, Jubilee bursts with “the aromas of freshly-baked banana bread and rich caramel. The spices used in this full-bodied winter warmer combined with a hint of molasses are reminiscent of the complex flavors of gingerbread.”

Additionally, the Eagle Rock Brewery team put together a gift pack that features Stimulus, a Belgian-style Amber ale made with Intelligentsia Coffee. The gift pack includes one 22-ounce bottle of Stimulus, a special edition Stimulus glass, and a bag of Intelligentsia coffee beans; it’s available at the brewery taproom and at select Total Wine & More store locations. More information.

BONUS TIP: Speaking of Total Wine, a new iBook version of their 200-page Total Guide to Beer is now available as a free download online. Paperback versions of the book are also available for free in-store, while supplies last.

El Segundo Brewing Co. | For those who dig a big, dark imperial stout, look no further than El Segundo Brewing’s Standard Crude. Brewed only once a year, Standard Crude is described as being “roasty throughout with many deep undertones of blackberry, cassis, tobacco, and leather.” Bottles of Standard Crude can be found at select bottle shops and at the El Segundo Brewing Co. taproom.

BONUS TIP: Should you stop in at the brewery proper, do yourself a favor and get yourself a glass or a growler of their new Mayberry IPA, full of tropical fruit and citrus aromas thanks to a hearty dose of Mosaic hops.

Monkish Brewing Co. | Henry Nguyen and his team have bottled Monkish Magnificat, a Belgian-style spiced Christmas ale brewed with honey, coriander, sweet and bitter orange peels, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

BONUS TIP: If you're picking up some Magnificat at Monkish’s Torrance taproom, try Altar Boy while you’re there; it’s a new Belgian-style pale ale brewed with Mosaic hops.

Beachwood BBQ & Brewing | Beachwood 7 Double IPA bottles were released at the two Beachwood BBQ locations just three days ago and they’ve already sold out. (No surprise given that they were named Mid-Size Brewpub of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival in October!) Some Beachwood 7 bottles—brewed to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the original Beachwood BBQ location in Seal Beach—may still be found at select bottle shops, but don’t head to the brewery in Long Beach or the restaurant in Seal Beach expecting to get any.

BONUS TIP: Not in bottles at least… a limited amount is still available on draft, but it’s not expected to last very long, especially given all the food and drink specials they have going on this week as part of their anniversary celebration.

The Bruery | From our friends in Orange County comes 6 Geese-A-Laying, the sixth in their 12 Days of Christmas beer series. The Bruery’s latest holiday release is a “return to more classic dark and toasty winter ale”, brewed with cape gooseberries, “display[ing] notes of plums, dark cherry and bright, citrus-like flavors.”

BONUS TIP: While 6 Geese-A-Laying is available at select local bottle shops, should you make the trek out to the Placentia brewery, you’ll find several special vintage beers on sale each day as part of their #12DaysOfBruery beer promotion. Available today: Batch 50 G.F.A.R., Papier, and 2009 Saison de Lente.
