Giving Back, Breakfast with Santa, Where to Get Timpano, and More!
Here are the food events worth nibbling on this week
Orange Picking at the Huntington Gardens — 12/21
Food Forward—the organization that recovers otherwise lost produce and delivers it to those in need—is hosting a number of events this weekend. Pick oranges at the Huntington Gardens, mandarins in Temple City, or grapefruit in Arcadia and watch as hundreds of pounds of fruit are transformed from waste into nourishment for those in need. Volunteer registration is free. More information.
Breakfast with Santa at The Music Center — 12/21-22
Standing in line at the mall for a photo with Santa is not much fun. Instead, bring the whole family downtown for breakfast with St. Nick. As part of its annual tradition, the Mark Taper Forum dishes out a breakfast spread ($55 per adult; $25 per child). Games and gifts round out the morning with the season's jolliest fellow. More information.
Cecconi's Timpano — 12/24
Forget ham and goose: your holiday table won't be complete without a Stanley Tucci-approved timpano. Chef Andrea Cavaliere has recreated the dish that the 1996 film Big Night made famous. The massive, drum-shaped pasta pie will be available at the West Hollywood restaurant for dine-in or take-out. Orders must be placed at least 48 hours in advance. Each Timpano serves up to 10 people and costs $90. More information.
Christmas Eve at Mohawk Bend — 12/24
Vegan, Jewish, and nowhere to go? Echo Park's Mohawk Bend serves a menu of vegan Chinese small plates (spicy green beans, veggie fried rice, cashew cheese wontons, all $6-$8 each) from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Stay in and watch Breakfast at Tiffany's. More information.
Universal Appliance & Kitchen Center Benefit — 12/27-30
Those in the know save their dollars for after Christmas, when everything goes on sale. Splurge on a new stove or oven this season and Universal Appliance & Kitchen Center in Studio City and Calabasas will donate proceeds to the Children's Hospital of L.A. More information.
