Salud! Mexican Wine Crosses Over at Wine Riot L.A. 2013

Don't miss the Mexican wines at this weekend's Wine Riot.

This Saturday and Sunday, Tyler Balliet and Morgan First’s company, Second Glass, host their highly interactive Wine Riot. At the annual, traveling event, attendees can access 250 wines from around the globe for only $60 a person in a pair of four hour wine tasting sessions.

Participating wineries will be pouring at The Majestic Halls in Downtown L.A.’s historic core. Inside, they will be laid out by varietals or regions.

The Wine Riot has a free mobile app that makes for a fun and practical experience, allowing the user to easily rate their wines as they taste. It also helps users navigate the event, and find local liquor stores where they can purchase the wines they like.

International wines will be offered at over 35 booths, and this includes the mainstream debut of Mexican wines at an international event. To date, Mexican wine has only been present at Latino events meant to cater to the local Latino population. Only three Mexican wineries will be at this, the third edition of Los Angeles’ Wine Riot, but there’s enough of a variety for you to get an idea what’s happening in the Valle de Guadalupe.

Monte Xanic made its name in the 80’s as one of Mexico’s first boutique wineries, driven by legendary oenologist, Hans Backhoff, and now his son, Hans Backhoff, Jr. Monte Xanic will be pouring their crisp, refreshing Chenin Colombard, a red Baja-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carignan, and their Calixa Rosado from Backhoff’s more affordable line.

The last two wineries are young, exciting producers that are both a part of the Valle de Guadalupe’s most recent wave of boutique wineries.  Fraternidad’s 2009 Trazo, a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Viognier. It has a fine structure, full of fruit, dark chocolate, and toast.

Perhaps the wine that will impress the most is Vinicola Urbana’s 2009 XikBal Cabernet Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Carignan. A full-bodied blend, note the hit of red fruit with a touch of Oak. It's perfect with duck tacos or roasted lamb.

Download your guide to this uproarious, urban wine escapade, and partake in the fruit of the Valle de Guadalupe at the Wine Riot Los Angeles 2013.
