Summer Event Watch: Burritos & Merlot at the 8th Annual East L.A. Meets Napa

A few weeks ago, I attended a preview at Loteria Grill in Hollywood for the 8th Annual East L.A. Meets Napa, which will take place on July 19th at Union Station. Tickets are priced at $200.00 a person; this is a fundraiser for Alta Med, which provides health care services to children, their families and seniors in the Latino and multi-ethnic communities of Southern California.

The event always sells out (as tickets are limited to 1500 guests), but it’s one of the spiciest nights during  L.A.’s busy food and drink event packed summer.

Where else can you enjoy a burrito from El Tepeyac with a Renteria cabernet while a salsa band kicks works the clave, and experience a truly Los Angeles style Latino night life? It’s the Conga Room meets Cesar Chavez Ave.

This event attracts most of our Mexican and Latin fine dining and chef-driven restaurants: Rivera, Rocios Moles de Los Dioses, Juan’s Restaurante,  La Huasteca, Setá, and Loteria Grill. They plated a delicious taco bilingüe at the preview, of both pork and beef tongue.  There are more than 30 participating restaurants in all, and over 40 wineries.

I’m happy to report that East L.A. and Boyle Heights classics—old and new—will be featured at this year’s extravaganza: Teresita’s, La Parrilla, and Guisados, who will bring their popular selections of braises and stews on those addictive handmade tortillas, like a dense and spicy cochinita, or slow cooked pork.

Baja wines are back again to augment the mostly Napa wineries. Tacos, and Latin staples will delight the paladar (palette), and hips will swirl to the cumbia and the mambo, just a stone’s throw from where Los Angeles was founded.
