Breaking: Tom Bergin's to Close this Sunday

What the what?!

Well, this is just downright un-American. In a tragic start to the holiday weekend, Fairfax landmark Tom Bergin's—the 77-year-old Irish tavern—has announced that it will close its doors at the end of Sunday’s business day.

The restaurant announced the closure this afternoon on its Facebook page with the following statement: “We are sorry to let everyone know that this Sunday will be Tom Bergin's last day of business. Please join us in our last few days; we'd love to see as many familiar faces as possible.”

This story is developing.

The restaurant and bar—famed for Irish coffees and the paper shamrocks awarded to regular customers plastering the walls and ceiling—was purchased by Brandon Boudet and business partner Warner Ebbink in 2011, and reopened after several delays in 2012.

Stay tuned for details.

I spent many a night humming,"How are Things In Glocca Morra?", my mother's favorite song, whilst sipping on an Irish coffee....or six.

Why does this city have to f*&k up everything?
    Seriously.

Somebody who knows the owner or the situation should immediately look into ways to save Bergins. If it is a money issue, can they not explore the amazing thing that is crowd sourcing? I'd contribute greatly to save this place. It's the BEST place in all of LA.

Very sad. Brandon Boudet and business partner Warner Ebbink transformed a cheap restaurant with lousy food and a glorious past into an expensive restaurant with lousy food and a glorious past. The world just doesn't make sense any more...

What about Richard Riordan or Rick Caruso? Surely there is someone with the requisite level of funds and business sense to keep this beloved place open. It's been a home away from home for generations of Angelenos; how could these guys just walk in and screw things up this badly?

I sure as hell better get my shamrock back.

    Ugh! Sadness. Desperation. Disbelief.

Crossing fingers that this is not the end. I love the crowd-sourcing idea posted by Ryan. can you kickstarter a bar?

if this really is the end, can all of us shamrock achievers retrieve our shamrock to hang proudly in our own homes/tents/airstreams/wherever?

    sobbing in my whiskey
