Where To Fish for Deals on Sushi

Cheap sushi isn’t an oxymoron (or a health hazard). These four spots nail the quality-to-price ratio.

Sushi Don
Sushi Don shares an owner with the high-end Sasabune, meaning you’re noshing on the same fish selected by the esteemed Nobi Kushuhara, without the fine-dining upcharge. Nigiri, $4-$5.50; rolls, $4.50-$6. 970 Monument St., Pacific Palisades, sushidon.net; 4816 Laurel Canyon Blvd., Valley Village

Sakae Sushi

The 50-year-old shop specializes in elegant traditional sushi boxes. Rolls stuffed with cured mackerel, pickled vegetables, or fried bean curd are packaged to go. Rolls, 80¢-95¢ per piece. 1601 W. Redondo Beach Blvd., Gardena, 310-532-4550

Hide Sushi

UCLA coeds fuel up with squid, salmon, and halibut nigiri for less than $5 apiece. The generous chirashi (sashimi on rice) bowl is as affordable as it is picturesque. Nigiri, $3.20-$16. 2040 Sawtelle Blvd., West L.A.

Noshi Sushi

At this cult hideaway for the thrifty, don’t pass up the spicy tuna hand roll, similar in heft to a supersize ice cream cone. Nigiri, $3.20-$9.50. 4430 Beverly Blvd., Koreatown
