For the fifth year in a row, the Los Angeles edition of the Hola Mexico Film Festival, presents dinner and a movie, Mexico style. It's running now through May 22, and there are a few interesting food events happening during its run.

The event’s founder, Samuel Douek, started the festival in Australia, before bringing it to New York, and then finally realizing that there was a natural audience here in L.A.

The event merges cinema with cuisine and music, making Hola Mexico a truly cultural event keeping with the times, where food has become entertainment.
If that’s not your thing, consider a documentary about mezcal called Viva Mezcal—a film that talks with the various players in the production of one of Mexico’s traditional agave spirits. But will we get to drink mezcal?—absolutely. The screening takes place tonight at L.A.’s Oaxacan institution, La Guelaguetza, and will be paired with a variety of mezcals and a dinner by Origen Oaxaca’s chef Rodolfo Castellanos, who worked in some of San Francisco’s finest restaurants before returning to Oaxaca.

The main event will be the Gran Parrillada, or barbeque, on May 19 at La Plaza de Culturas y Artes. Five Mexican star chefsincluding Tabascan chef Aquiles Chavez of Houston’s La Fisheria, Tijuana’s chef Javier Plascencia of Mision 19, master chocolatier Jose Ramon Castillo, Tolucan Chef Pablo Salas of Amaranta, and once again, Chef Rodolfo Catellanos from Oaxaca will take center stage.

They will present a grilling feast of vegetables, fruits macerated in mezcal and brown sugar, northern tacos al carbon, and southern style tostadas of offal and smoked fish. Grilled octopus tacos? Sweetbread tostadas slathered with refried beans?—a star is born.

Hola Mexico Film Festival, May 15-22, best bets for foodists—Viva Mezcal (5/16) and the Gran Parrillada (5/19)
