New & Notable Restaurant Openings: Week of May 10

The Polo Lounge, Stella Barra, and more openings this week

Beverly Hills: The Polo Lounge inside the Beverly Hills Hotel has been softly closed to most guests for the better part of two months. This week, the hotel reopened its 73-year old dining lounge after a subtle facelift from restaurant designer Adam Tihany. Except, the power brokers who frequent the place might not even notice that anything’s changed. The colors are the same and the furniture is all mostly in the same place. It’s being described as “brighter.” Otherwise, the big news here is that the cabanas will get an update by next summer. The Polo Lounge, 9641 Sunset Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA 90210 (310) 887-2777

Hollywood: Chef Jeff Mahin’s Stella Rossa in Santa Monica has spawned a Hollywood sister. Stella Barra opened this Wednesday on the corner near Sunset and Vine that used to house a place called BoHo. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you’ll find more than just pizza here. Mahin has a larger menu of side dishes (the organic meatball with tomato, lardo, and basil sounds nice), plates of crudo and house-made pasta in addition to salads, sandwiches, and house-made breakfast pastries. Tarzana: Our own Bill Esparza sends word of this, the newest location of Rocio's Mole de los Dioses. The new Tarzana spot held a soft-opening party this Thursday and opens tonight to the general public. Like the original Sun Valley location, the menu in Tarzana features all of Rocia’s moles (which each take 6-8 hours to prepare). Also on the menu in Tarzana are frijoles de la olla, which are beans served with chopped serrano, habanero, and onions on the side. Rocia's Mole de los Dioses, 19321 Ventura Blvd.,Tarzana. CA 91356 (818) 457-4545

Hollywood: Create Nightclub soft opens tonight in the space formerly known as Vanguard. Lest you think this is a “normal” nightclub, hold up. You won't have to stand in line for hours unless you promise to buy some ridiculously expensive bottle of champagne with a (fire-hazard) sparkler in it. The general public can buy tickets online now for the grand opening tomorrow night. What was that again? That’s right, this is an entertainment venue from nightlife and restaurant guys SBE (Mercato di Vetro, the Emerson Theater) and Insomniac (Electric Daisy Carnival, which is now working on a documentary) that sells tickets in advance. The 20,000 square foot space has an open air patio, four bars, a massive dance floor, and an intimate back lounge. Create, 6021 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028 (323) 463-3331
