Third-generation Henry's Tacos owner Janis Hood confirms that the 51-year-old roadside taco stand will be closing its doors Saturday, January 12 after being unable to find a resolution to an alleged rent dispute with the property's landlord. While there was a glimmer of hope that new buyers might be found to take over the restaurant, Hood said those deals fell through.
Instead, Hood will be working to find a new location, and transfer ownership to Omar Vega—a 21-year employee of Henry's Tacos. "The two potential buyers weren't happy with the rent deal they were offered," Hood explains. "So they come back to me and ask me to lower the selling price by $50,000. And right then I realized that I was tired of getting nickel-and-dimed by people who already have way too much money, so I thought 'Here I've got this incredible employee who's been with us for so long and he wants to take it over, why not pay it forward?'"
No details are available on potential locations or a timeframe, but the hunt is on. Henry's Tacos' last day as we know it will be tomorrow, and it will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (or until food runs out). FYI: reports of 90-minute-long waits have been spotted, but for longtime fans, it's a small price to pay for one last crunchy tostado.
