Vegan blogger extraordinaire Quarrygirl just posted another installment of her recently launched video series that highlights some of L.A.’s best plant-based eats. Previously hitting Studio City’s Sun Cafe, QG now heads a touch west to drop by one of my favorite Valley spots: Hugo’s Tacos. (Sister restaurant of the very vegan-friendly sit-down Hugo’s just across the street.)
Tom Kaplan, one of the partners behind Hugo’s Tacos, sits down and talks about the restaurant—which also has an Atwater Village location and another in planning in Woodland Hills. (A shameless sidenote: Tom, if you’re reading this, I’m begging you… please bring the creamy green risotto back to Hugo’s proper. My life has been lacking ever since it left your menu’s hallowed pages. Thanks.)
Best bets in my opinion? Try the torta ahogada with mixed veggies and salsa negra or the green vegan tamales, made with sweet corn and spinach. Whatever you order, definitely save room for dessert; their housemade soft-serve—dubbed “frozato”—is pretty darn tasty.
