Even if you don’t know what a bubbie is, you probably have one. Originally the Yiddish word for grandmother, a bubbie can be any loved one—an aunt, a roommate, a teacher—with whom you share special memories, particularly of food. The Beyond Bubbie project is an online community designed to preserve the culinary legacy of these individuals, and to share their recipes and the stories behind them.
On November 13th, the website will officially launch with “Who’s Your Bubbie?,” an evening of reflecting, storytelling, and (of course) eating at the Skirball Cultural Center. Evan Kleiman of KCRW’s “Good Food” will host a conversation with L.A. Times restaurant critic Jonathan Gold, James Beard Award-winning author David Sax, and local chefs Roxana Jullapat of Cooks County, Micah Wexler of Mezze, and Susan Feniger of STREET and Border Grill. These special guests will share stories about their Bubbies’ cooking, and spark exchanges between guests about their own Bubbies.
If all that reminiscing about childhood recipes gets you salivating, scrumptious snacks will be provided, as well as drinks for purchase. Tickets to the event are $20 and can be bought here. If you bring your own bubbie’s recipe, you will not only be featured on the Beyond Bubbie website, but you will also be entered into a drawing to win gift certificates to the speakers’ restaurants!
