Why Can’t Jenny Lewis Be “Just One of the Guys”?

Is her new song a jangly but profoundly melancholy deconstruction of differing expectations for men and women?

WHAT: While “Weird Al” Yankovic is halfway through an amazing eight-day marathon of music video parodies (we’re particularly fond of “Foil,” a spoof of Lorde’s “Royals”), local musician Jenny Lewis released a must-see video of her own. The clip for “Just One of the Guys” finds the Mouseketeer-turned-Silver-Lake pop princess goofing off with a few of her pals—Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson—all of whom are dressed as dudes in track suit and baseball caps. Then there’s the song, with a chorus that runs: “No matter how hard I try / To be just one of the guys / There’s a little something inside / That won’t let me / No matter how hard I try / To have an open mind / There’s a little clock inside / That keeps ticking.”

VERDICT: Fascinating. Is “Just One of the Guys” a jangly but profoundly melancholy deconstruction of differing expectations for men and women? An acerbic assessment of middle-aged dudes who date much younger women? A personal lament about childlessness? A celebration of childlessness? A middle finger to a culture that judges women for childlessness? Maybe all (or none) of the above. Whatever it is, the tune is a cheerful earworm and K.Stew looks great as a guy.
