What Brooke Shields Really Wants to Do is Direct … Chicago: The Musical
A Q&A with the star behind the Hollywood Bowl’s production of the Broadway hit
Why shift from starring in Chicago to directing it?
It was [music director] Rob Fisher’s idea. He knows how passionate I am about the show, and he said, “I think you’ve got something to say—this should be your debut.”
Do you have a new appreciation for the play and its challenges?
My biggest challenge is fitting it into the magnitude of the Hollywood Bowl. Bob Fosse’s choreography is iconic—the difficulty is presenting the piece in a slightly different way and making it fresh. It’s a vaudeville show, but my goal is to make it work for 18,000 people.
Chicago will be at the Hollywood Bowl July 26-28.
