We Advance

It was a family affair with homemade vittles and excellent rum at Maria Bello’s We Advance fundraiser.

The directions to get to the Malibu manse for the We Advance to-do instructed you not to rely on internet maps. Apparently the interwebs doesn’t know every hill in the ‘Bu. And it was indeed a rustic and winding road to get up to gorgeous perch, but it was worth it for the 360 degree ocean views and the good cheer as many folks gathered to support Bello’s and Barbara Guillaume’s work to “advance the health, safety and well being of women throughout Haiti.” Guillaume (who was born and raised in Haiti) traveled from the country to Malibu for the bash saying, “This is wasting money,” she said of traveling to Cali, “but I’m glad I came. I love Malibu.” According to Bello, Guillaume also cooked most of the food served for dinner—garlic chicken, plantains, pork, rice and beans—as she wanted all monies to go to fundraising, not fetes. The small gathering was actually meant to be at a home in the Palisades, but apparently outgrew those digs and Bello opened up her place. As the sun went down, Danny Moder (sans wife Julia Roberts) flicked through a slideshow of his pics of his family’s recent trip to the resiliant country. Guillaume (who is also a folk singer) got up and sang a tune as the sun went down and was followed by a sultry Brenna Whitaker who kept the music going into the night. I spied Rob Morrow (having a couple sips of rum) and the best dressed award goes to Obsolete gallery/shop owner Ray Azoulay (see pic). Bello looked around at the throng gathered on the front lawn (some buying jewelry set up on tables for the cause) and said, “What a huge crowd! I had no idea. Haiti is an amazing place. I knew the minute I put my foot down there that I was f#&*d. So many of our friends are doing incredible s#*t. I’m so lucky to have a voice.” For more info go to: http://weadvance.org/
