Rocker’s Paradise

John Varvatos throws a get-together for Glenn Hughes and his new book: From Deep Purple to Black Country Communion

The festivities were in full swing when I arrived at the John Varvatos shop in the Malibu Country Mart. There were plenty of gents sporting bandanas, some serious hair, and many a chain hooked to a wallet jangled away. All were gathered to hear funk rock pioneer Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath) perform and later sign copies of his new book. “I’ve been a fan waaay too long,” Varvatos said before Hughes took to a stage set up in the corner of the spacious boutique (which is filled top to bottom with rock photos) and began to wail. In fact, you could hear him all over the Mart. I wish I could scream in tune. Who was there sipping Icelandic Glacial water? Patrick Dempsey, Brooke Burke, and Dean McDermott.

Like Patrick, good looking guy. I always look at the crowd photos to see if I can see you, and you always manage to avoid the cameras!!!!
