I could hear George Michael wailing (“It’s just a matter of time .... Wham! Wham! La da da dada...) when I hit the entrance to the Malibu Lumberyard—the tune was blasting from Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford’s already hoppin’ pre-Fourth of July party. While Crawford was stationed at the bar greeting and chatting, Gerber was on the patio laughing about something with John Corbett (who is currently sporting a bushy beard). I noticed the Ambassador to Haiti aka Sean Penn having a drink along the wall with his chums. I was about to congratulate him on quitting smoking (he didn’t leave for a puff for half an hour, a record for him, so I assumed...) when he excused himself to have a smoke. DJ Best stuck with the 80’s most of the night and guests bobbed to and fro between the bar inside the restaurant and one out on the patio. Gerber’s new venture, Caliche Rum, was on hand (that was a fine mojito) and, though I know I shouldn’t still be impressed with cool ice cubes, the big, rectangular ones that filled the glasses were neat. Caliche hats were strewn about and wound up on everyone’s noggins eventually. Who else did I spy giving the 4th an early shout out? Fran Drescher, T-shirt king James Perse, Daisy Fuentes, Lisa Rinna, Harry Hamlin, hockey player Sheldon Souray, and record producer Rick Rubin. Happy Fourth of July, Everyone!
