Slide Show: Dia de Los Muertos in a Hollywood Boneyard
Bring out your dead! A photo gallery from Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s big Day of the Dead celebration
Halloween is over but Dia de Los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead, is about to kick off, and Los Angeles is the place to celebrate it. In addition to delicious things to eat, this weekend there will be dozens of Dia de Los Muertos events happening around town, from San Pedro to San Fernando. Self Help Graphics, Grand Park, and Eastside Luv in Boyle Heights are good bets. But L.A.’s premier (and one of the country’s largest) Dia de Los Muertos celebrations happens at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. You couldn’t find a more perfect locale for a holiday that honors the dearly departed.
The large, day-long festival isn’t only a celebration of the Mexican holiday and an exhibition of elaborate altars, it’s also a terrific concert. This year’s lineup features Norwalk’s Buyepongo, local cumbia heroes Chicano Batman, Tijuana-raised, L.A.-based Ceci Bastida, and Saul Hernandez of Jaguares.
To warm you up for this weekend’s calaveras and altares, here are ghoulish and festive scenes from last year’s festival.
