Artists Jaime “Vyal” Reyes and Patssi Valdez make a Lexus CT200h even better in the name of art

The first thing I saw when I walked into Self Help Graphic’s Art Feria and Awards Dinner was a transformed, tricked out, sparkling Lexus. Loved it. You’d have to really, really prefer silver to not appreciate the gold work of art Jaime “Vyal” Reyes and Patssie Valdez (a member of ASCO) created called “Art Galleries and Back Alleys.” “That started as a working title and it just kind of stuck,” Reyes explained as folks took snaps of the car and peered inside to see all of the intricate work. Cambalache and GomezComesAlive! performed inside the tent as supporters of the 40-year-old Chicano arts center took their seats. Comedienne Monique Marvez emceed. “You know, we have no word for old folks home in Spanish. We keep ‘em,” she joked (one of many throughout the night). SHG executive director Evonne Gallardo handed out awards to philanthropists Armando Duron, Castulo de la Rocha, and Bank of America. Awards also went to artists including Yolanda Gonzalez, Wayne Alaniz Healy, and Miguel Angel Reyes. The other star of the evening was dinner. Juan’s Restaurante and mole and cactus tortillas to die for. Gallardo said it best: “I love art, but I love artists more.” For more info on Self Help Graphics go to: selfhelpgraphics.com/

Nice! You wanted a new car? How would this one work driving around LA then?

Love to drive it, but I don’t think you can sit in it. Every surface was covered in bling in intricate designs.
