Quick Take: Cold War Kids “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”

Piano, saxophone, and electronic fuzz anchor an album of mood swings

Long Beach’s Cold War Kids are no longer youths, and the quartet shows off that maturity on its most versatile outing yet (Downtown Records, $14). With a high-timbre moan that recalls Florence Welch, Nathan Willett is both bold and sincere without the gooey earnestness. Piano, saxophone, and electronic fuzz anchor an album of mood swings that veer from Otis Redding-style soul to sprightly pop to foreboding dirges.
