Against the backdrop of a Katrina-like storm and with a dash of magical realism, first-time feature director Benh Zeitlin and writer Lucy Alibar’s Beasts of the Southern Wild (Fox Searchlight, $30) already has taken up residence on most ten-best-of-the-year lists before the year is even over. At the center of its troupe of bayou nomads is the preposterously preternatural Quvenzhané Wallis, nine years old and the powerhouse to beat for Best Actress.
