My LA To Z: Kevin Daniels
The star of USA’s new series “Sirens” (who you may also recognize as Longinus from “Modern Family”) may play a Chicagoan on TV, but he’s got L.A. on the brain. Here he tells us where he detoxes on Monday mornings, finds duds for that 6’5″ frame, and gets in a bit of salsa dancing
Cross Train LA
It’s a really cool fitness center on Sunset. [Instructors] David Schenk and his wife are just amazing. They put you through each day with different kinds of classes—no weights, all resistance. It’s a great boost that my buddy turned me on to. I’m always trying to stay in shape, so I love it.
Franklin & Company
When I’m not working out, I’m drinking at Franklin & Company! They have these incredible Bloody Marys that have got everything in them, including a cheeseburger. That’s right, the Bloody Mary Royale has a mini slider on it, plus stuffed onions, onion rings, gouda cheese. It’s crazy. I saw it for the first time when my castmate Michael Mosley Instagramed it, and I was like, “What’s that!”
Los Feliz 3 Cinemas
They have six dollar matinees right in Los Feliz village. It’s a cool old movie house with a great feel. They’ll show big pictures and really well-reviewed films, and you get the old concessions and comfy seats. Not as cool as reserved seats at ArcLight, but it’s great bang for your buck.
The first time I went to La Descarga was for a friend’s birthday party, and I was looking forward to the Cuban vibe. But I wasn’t expecting the entrance: a woman sits at what looks like the enterance to a closet. When you tell her your name, she turns and opens the “closet” and you walk into a huge club with burlesque dancers. I love the place. It doesn’t really have dance music per se, but it’s still great music.
If you want to go salsa dancing, El Floridita is the place to go. It’s a Cuban restaurant, but on Mondays they move the tables aside and you can dance. There are cheap drinks and food, too. It’s really fun.
The Room seems like a small club, but when the DJ puts on incredible ’90s hip hop and people are just dancing—the bartenders too—it’s a “back in high school” kind of vibe. There’s no sign on the door; you have to walk behind the alley to get in.
Earthbar has all these great cold-pressed juices, wheatgrass shots—really healthy detox stuff. So you can show up on TV and not give away that you’ve been dancing and drinking all night. It’s hilarious, I’m always seeing all kinds of actors on Monday morning—an insider’s tip!
I’m a really tall guy, 6’5’’, always trying to find clothes that are going to look good and fit. So many other places make clothes for “big and tall;” I’m like, “You can just be tall, you know!” At the Rack you can find stuff that won’t break the bank.
My friend Stacy is a designer at USC, and they always put her up somewhere cool. When she was at the Ace Hotel, we hung out at the rooftop. I really dug the vibe and gorgeous view. It’s a cool new hipster joint. Plus, the next day they were premiering a movie, so I was like, “Ok, this is where it’s at.”
The Record Parlour
My buddy and castmate Mike has a record player and is always collecting vinyl. You can go to Amoeba Music, but Record Parlor has a different vibe where you can sit and put headphones on. It’s really intimate, and cheap, too. And if you don’t like it, you can walk across to street to Amoeba.
The Short Stop
Motown Mondays at The Short Stop are really fun! I like to groove because that’s what I grew up on. On a Monday night in Echo park, that’s what everyone’s doing.
