Jazz in L.A.: 29th Annual Jazz Tribute Awards

81-year-old guitar innovator Kenny Burrell weighs in on the 29th Annual Jazz Tribute Awards: “I look forward to this every year. Wayne Shorter is getting the special [Jazz Tribute Honoree] award, and Herbie Hancock is giving it to him. That’s wonderful. Awards are important to jazz musicians because the people who know what they are doing are taking time out to say, ‘You’re great.’ There’s not enough attention given to jazz and not enough compensation for the musicians. Awards raise their profile, open them up to more resources, and help generate more gigs.”
