Holly Robinson Peete Shakes Up Her Annual Fete
Holly Robinson Peete shook her up annual DesignCare Fundraiser, taking it from a backyard ‘do at various fancy manses around town to The Lot Studios in Hollywood. Outback Steakhouse was MIA this go-round as well. I always got a bit of a thrill eating steak and potatoes in my fancy duds, but that’s OK. Change is good. This year Peete fancied up the grub with Global Cuisine by Gary Arabia, which served beet salads, duck, prime rib, and ding dongs on sticks (go ahead and giggle).
After a silent auction folks like Russell Simmons, Sugar Ray Leonard, Daisy Fuentes, Jason Priestley (who doesn’t age), Shaun Robinson, Laila Ali and Dwyane Wade popped into the studio for a Michael Costello runway show. The dresses were rock n’ roll (aka tight and mermaid-y—some of the models had a little trouble walking in them) and are what Costello will present at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week for fall. The Foundation presented awards to Serena Esformes (of SMAK Apparel), FedEx, Pamela Wiley-Wells (the founder of LA Speech and Language Center), Izzy Paskowitz (the founder of Surfer’s Healing), Ben Petrick (an author and former Major League Baseball player living with Parkinson’s) and Anthony Starego (the first varsity football player with autism) for their contributions to the Parkinson’s and autism communities. The live auction included a puppy (I am unsure how to feel about this) and R&B group Naturally 7 performed. A good time was had by all, especially Paskowitz, who dug the Ole Smoky Moonshine being served at the bar and provided a sweet yet colorful acceptance speech: “Oh it’s homeboy’s fault with the moonshine,” he explained. “I told him I would blow it!” Congrats to Peete and all the winners who do wonderful work.
