They're two people with only four hands, but Rodrigo y Gabriela manage to sound like a band that's half-a-dozen members strong. The rapid-fire acoustic guitar duo from Mexico blends melodious folk harmonies with meaty metal riffs. The two genres don’t share a lot of sonic overlap, but when you hear Rodrigo y Gabriela's aggressive strumming or watch as the two guitar players circle each other almost like fighters, that won't seem as strange as it sounds. It's a blend of incredible technique and pure showmanship.
The duo was recently in town, but if you missed last week's shows at the Orpheum Theatre and the Hollywood Palladium, you have one more chance to catch the pair. Tomorrow, KCRW will air an intimate live show recorded with the duo at Apogee Sessions. You won't be able to see Gabriela jump up and down, run in place, stamp her feet, or toss her hair. But you will be able to hear one of the few musical acts that manage to inspire audiences to spontaneously start clapping along with the music.
The set, which includes a terrific cover of Radiohead's "Creep," will air tomorrow (May 14) on Morning Becomes Eclectic, which runs weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.
