The Essential Movie Library #65: Caché (2005)

Michael Haneke directs this thriller story of a Parisian family who receive videotapes to their home from a mysterious source documenting their banal daily activities.

One day a Parisian family begins receiving on their doorstep videos that some anonymous voyeur has shot of their home outside. That the videos are banal is exactly what’s unsettling about them, in that they’re too ordinary to warrant having been shot at all—so why were they? Midway through Caché (the title is translated in English as Hidden), as the videos begin to unravel the life of the family, a sudden burst of violence raises questions about who’s behind the camera, or if anyone is; or if the voyeur is nothing less than the manifested id of our futurist times, when today holds back tomorrow like the boy with his thumb in the dam holding back the deluge.

This is a 21st-century thriller for the way it’s less about what it’s about—how the transgressions of a man’s childhood will be paid for by the man’s own child—than about what can’t or won’t be answered (including in the film’s credits, where a secret allegedly lurks). Thus Austrian director Michael Haneke works in the tradition of not just Michelangelo Antonioni but David Lynch, with whose Lost Highway (Essential Movie Library #18) Caché shares its central conceit; asked some years later about a connection between the two movies by Greil Marcus (who loves both), the filmmaker protested a bit too much that he never had seen the other. But in the world of this film it was Lynch on the other side of that Parisian street shooting Haneke’s movie, and Haneke stalking Bill Pullman’s house in Lynch’s.
