Party Where the Wild Things Are: L.A. Zoo Hosts 18+ Nights
This month only, get your groove on amid the spider monkeys, skinks, and snow leopards at the zoo.
When you were a kid did you ever dream of hiding inside the zoo so you could spy on the animals after hours? The L.A. Zoo offers you the chance to (legally) fulfill that fantasy with its first-ever Roaring Nights series, an 18+ summer fête taking place every Thursday this month. The first night of the series is tomorrow, and in this case, reality might be better than childhood fancy: There's booze.
In addition to the full-bar service, Roaring Nights attendees can enjoy treats from several Los Angeles food truck staples. Feed on Mexi-Cali-Asian fusion from Komodo, ice cream sammies from CoolHaus, or gooey goodness from the Grilled Cheese Truck while you explore the zoo's regular exhibitions or enjoy live animal encounters and zookeeper talks. Comedians like Rob Gleeson and Helen Hong will set up stage at the petting zoo each week to offer additional entertainment.
Those not content to simply eat, drink, and roam the grounds can get wild with the help of DJ Morningstar, who’ll spin at the carousel while dream pop band So Many Wizards plays a live set. A different local band will perform each week: folk rock band CHIEF on July 18 and solemn indie rockers NO on July 25.
Roaring Nights at the L.A. Zoo takes place Thursdays in July, 7-10 p.m. 5333 Zoo Dr., Los Angeles. $15 Zoo or KCRW members/$18 general.
