Hollywood Icons, Up Close And Personal: The Art of Photographer Sid Avery

James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Elizabeth Taylor. Sid Avery snapped some of the most intimate portraits of Hollywood stars.

Photographer Sid Avery had an uncanny ability to capture the private moments of the celebrities of his time. His dazzling images, which feature the likes of Marlon Brandon, James Dean, Steve McQueen, Audrey Hepburn, and Rock Hudson, reveal an intimate side of the stars. Shown at home, at the beach or relaxing on set, Avery’s portraits momentarily peel away the Hollywood veneer, introducing the person behind the icon.

On December 7, mptv, the agency that Sid Avery founded in the 1980s, will honor the photographer (who passed away in 2002) with a free exhibition of his work at Design Matters Gallery. Ron Avery, son of Sid, runs mptv today and curated the exhibition, which features 30 of Avery’s images (25 of them are for sale). In honor of the agency’s 25th anniversary, the show will travel to other cities in 2014. The L.A. exhibition is one-night-only, so be sure to pencil it in if you’ve ever wanted to own an original Sid Avery. Check out some of Avery’s amazing photos of classic Hollywood celebs above.

Where: Design Matters Gallery, 11527 West Pico Blvd
      When: December 7, noon – 7 p.m.
