Photograph by Richard Avedon
Richard Avedon pushed boundaries even as he transformed beauties like Brigitte Bardot and Brooke Shields into stars. For nearly 60 years the American photographer created black-and-white images that, in their dramatic use of shadows and props, drew emotional responses. Avedon: Women, an exhibition opening this month at the Gagosian Gallery, features more than 100 of the late lensman’s works, including his portrait of a nude Nastassja Kinski with a python slithering across her torso. It’s a keen example of how he redefined fashion photography.
