Robots, Wrestlers, Rockers & Cocktails: The 10 Best Things to Do in L.A. This Weekend

Here's your weekend agenda -- and it doesn't include Taylor Swift

Whether you want to watch lycra-clad divas doing piledrivers or relive the story of the Long Island Lolita, there's a taste to suit every palate. And just in case you're not going to Echo Park Rising, the two-day music festival that's taking over Echo Park this weekend, there's plenty of other music that's worth checking out.

HEAR: No Age
Catch a free show by local rockers No Age as they play tunes from An Object, their fourth full-length album. Did we mention that it's free? It's free! More information (August 16; Hammer Museum)

EXPERIENCE: Chinatown Summer Nights
Celebrate L.A.’s multicultural community at a summer block party featuring Chinese cultural activities, craft workshops, beer gardens and food trucks. Watch live cooking demos and shop the L.A. Craft Experience Market before hitting the dance floor where KCRW DJs will spin tunes from 8 p.m. till midnight. More information (August 17 Chinatown Central and West Plazas)

HEAR: Twilight Concert Series: Amadou & Mariam + Y La Bamba
Make like a tourist and flock to the Santa Monica Pier for Amadou & Mariam + Y La Bamba at the 29th Annual Twilight Concert Series, where African rock and Portland scenesters join forces to create a cross-cultural vibe. More information (August 16; Santa Monica Pier)

SEE: Everything Is Festival
Take a hint from the title of this festival which includes a little bit of everything. Office Space and King of the Hill creator Mike Judge will show up to screen his legendary mixtape of found footage, a midnight screening that mashes up all three Amy Fisher movies (with Joey Buttafuoco in person), a talent show, standup comedy, outrageous video games and more! More information (Through August 22; Cinefamily)

HEAR: Queens of the Stone Age
As the last original member of the high-octane rock band, Josh Homme brings a touch of the past when his group performs its latest album …Like Clockwork. More information (August 17; Gibson Amphitheatre)

EAT: Julia Child Pasadena Cocktail Party
Kick off “SIP-tember,” Pasadena’s six-week Celebration of the Cocktail, with a citywide cocktail party celebrating what would be the 101st birthday of beloved Pasadena native, Julia Child. Multiple area restaurants and bars will join in on the fun, culminating in a citywide happy birthday toast at 7 p.m. Guests are encouraged to dress for a 1950s-, ’60s-, or ’70s-era shindig. More information (August 15; Pasadena)

TOUCH: Robotics By The Sea
At this yearly homage to mechanized Nemos, learn how robotic aquanauts explore the watery depths as you pilot a remote submersible. More information (August 17; Cabrillo Marine Aquarium)

SEE: Rapture, Blister, Burn
Gina Gionfriddo’s Pulitzer-nominated comedy follows the paths of four women who examine how the pressures of the progressive life create real-world dilemmas. It’s not your mother’s feminism. More information (Through Sep. 22; Geffen Playhouse)

SLURP: Watermelon Festival
Get in line for the seed-spitting contest or belly up for tall, cool glass of watermelon juice. The annual Sunland-Tujunga shindig has moved to Pasadena, where Southern California’s longest running, all volunteer, non-profit festival continues into its 52nd consecutive year. (August 16-18; Rose Bowl)

SEE: WWE Summer Slam
SummerSlam is WWE'S second biggest pay-per-view event of the year and the throwdown—both literal and figurative—will take over the city for the week leading up to the event with charity events, parties, Make-a-Wish appearances, anti-bullying rallies at local schools, reading events, and more. Julia Child event was the day before this was posted. Would have been nice to have info about it before it happened.
