Describe the sound that has emerged in Northeast L.A.
When I moved to the area in 1997, there was a retro, ’60s rock scene. Now there’s a whole spectrum of artists. The indie aspect remains, but just as that genre has broadened, so has the Northeast sound.

How has L.A.’s creative community influenced your music?
The thing for me is being around interesting artists who are working hard. It’s difficult to grow without a strong community.

Is your process married to a sense of place?
Songwriting can be affected by a physical place, but it’s more affected by the place I am at in my life.
