Quick Take: Manzanar to Mount Whitney

Hank Umemoto's memoir and hiking diary

In 1942, 14-year-old Hank Umemoto looked through the windows of his barracks at the Manzanar internment camp and dreamed of climbing Mount Whitney. Fifty-seven years later he did it. Equal parts memoir and hiking diary (Heydey, 224 pages, $17), the book’s Owens Valley landscapes give way to tales about Umemoto’s many lives: as janitor, dishwasher, skid row denizen, soldier, jeweler, and writer.
