This Weekend: Art in the Arroyo

From Depression-era realism to postmodern pastiche

California Scene Paintings from 1930 to 1960
Commissioned by the Works Progress Administration, these rustic murals and sculptures have become documents of American landscapes on the brink of extinction.

Christopher Miles: Bloom
The arts writer and sculptor’s first museum exhibition showcases a delightfully distorted view of reality. Miles’s abstract, alienlike forms in acrylic, paper, and aluminum provoke the imaginations of those who stand before them.

Meander
To L.A. artist John O’Brien, California’s freeways are art. Crafting uncanny moments from familiar objects, he mashes up images of Arroyo Seco Park-way off-ramps with sculptures that read
like graffiti.

All three shows run from March 10 to July 28; pmcaonline.org.
