The Essential Movie Library #18: Lost Highway (1997)

Our collective nightmare and the most depraved home-movie ever

Almost three decades beyond Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and before the critics’ subsequent embrace of Mulholland Drive in 2001 as writer-director David Lynch’s resurrection, this superior film by Lynch hypnotically and ruthlessly charted the same territory—the rape of privacy, the rapture of voyeurism, the elusiveness of identity—in a city where the dolls have taken over and civilization bleeds into the desert.

Lost Highway is our collective nightmare as the most depraved home-movie ever, scored to a Trent Reznor soundtrack. Starring Bill Pullman as a no-wave sax player (performing at a club called the Luna Lounge), Robert Loggia as the avenging angel of anyone who ever has been tailgated (on the real Mulholland Drive, at the same bend of the road that proves fateful in the later film of the same name), and Robert Blake as a vision of death (who could only hope that, when he was tried years later for murdering his wife, the jury didn’t see this), nonetheless the film’s centerpiece is Patricia Arquette. With her feathery voice and glowing voluptuous body, she’s the movies’ most fatal femme since Ann Savage, whose dangerous road into town in the mid-‘40s punk-noir Detour resembles the one here by which Pullman takes flight.
