The Edge of Forever
What better way to celebrate the end of the world? Premiering on the (supposedly) ill-fated December 21, 2012, this chamber operetta was inspired by the ending of the Mayan long count calendar. And it’s being performed in a Los Feliz building designed in the Mayan Revival architecture style. Spooky stuff. (Friday, Dec. 21; Philosophical Research Society) More information

Holiday Sing-Along with Julie Andrews
You know that part in The Sound of Music where Maria and the Von Trapp children sing together as if they’re the happiest family in the freaking universe? Join in the fun when the Angeles Chorale provides lush backup for seasonal tunes. (Saturday, Dec. 22; Disney Hall) More information

The Nutcracker Swings
City Ballet of Los Angeles gives the holiday staple an L.A. twist, which is only fitting. The setting is Hancock Park during World War II, when the Prince returns home on Christmas Eve and presents a nutcracker doll to Maria, leading to a round-the-world adventure. Much of the story, of course, is familiar, including the original score by Tchaikovsky. But this interpretation also interweaves Duke Ellington’s jazzy Nutcracker Suite. (Friday-Saturday, Dec. 21-22; Wilshire Ebell Theatre) More information

X
Quintessential American punk rockers take the stage once again. The band, which helped put the L.A. punk scene on the map, brings their raw ferocity to Hollywood, once their stamping ground. (Friday, Dec. 21; Fonda Theatre) More information

End of the World in WeHo
On the off chance that the world truly ends, West Hollywood is ready to go out with a bang. Local businesses such as the Abbey Food & Bar, Eleven Nightclub, Fiesta Cantina, Mickey’s West Hollywood, Revolver Video Bar, and Yogurt Stop will offer food and drink specials all night long (or until the Earth explodes). (Friday, Dec. 21; West Hollywood) More information
