Debbie Allen’s The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker doesn’t arrive at Royce Hall till December, but here’s a way for Fame fans to get a taste of the dancer-choreographer’s aesthetic before then: A gala fund-raiser on November 1 will feature a concert version of Allen’s new musical, Freeze Frame, which focuses on inner-city youth as they confront gangs, police, violence, religion, and love.
The cast includes Tony Award-winning actor Cleavant Derricks (Dreamgirls), Vivian Nixon (Allen’s daughter), and students of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. The evening at Culver City’s BookBindery events space will also showcase the work of production designer Rick Carter (Avatar, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, War Horse, among others). Examples of the Academy Award winner’s work—spanning four decades—will be for sale. Tickets for the event are $150 to $100,000, with proceeds going to various arts education initiatives for L.A. youths. Call 310-202-1711 or go here for more information.
