Autograph hunters, roving photographers, and beaded and bewigged fans swarmed the Pantages theater last night at the opening of the musical Hair. The show last played Los Angeles in an extended run in 1972 a few blocks away at the Aquarius on Sunset and several of the stars from that production were in attendance. Most notably the actor Ben Vereen, with a black fedora and enormous golden ankh, who briefly joined the "tribe" on stage singing along to "Let the Sun Shine In." Knowing that senior scenesters Jack Carter and Charlotte Rae were right behind me made some of the raunch a little uncomfortable (Mrs. Garrett would not approve of that trip, mister) but the cheers were deafening as we all swung along with Woof, Berger, Hud and the rest of the hair bare bunch. The production runs through January 23. Check back next week to read Macho Show Queen’s review.
