British Polo Day in L.A.

The last time I saw Team Royal Salute take the field (in Carpinteria), they won with a certain Prince (second in line to the British throne) playing and his new wife in the crowd. This go-round the team made a valiant effort but were defeated by the Eton Polo Team at the match held at Will Rogers Polo Club at the first British Polo Day event.

This was the first time this Brit polo event was held in the U.S. The affair hit Dubai and Morocco before landing on our shores. The sport drew guests like The Duke of Argyll, Elon Musk, Talulah Riley and Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor. Riley ended up winning a bottle of Royal Salute 38 Years Old Stone of Destiny Scotch Whisky at auction. The day raised around $55,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Homeboy Industries.

After tea (produced by Charles & Company), Oxford Group Holdings Oxbridge team took the field against their counterparts here in Cali, and the home team (us!) won. Then everyone held up a glass and saluted each other and the horses. With 400-plus people in attendance, it looks like the event is here to stay. Hurrah! I know everyone is watching hockey just now but how can you not like a sport that expects fans to wear big hats and stops everything for tea (not to mention merits fewer blows to the face)?
