Bare Naked Ladies
It kinda goes without saying that I walked into The Annenberg Space for Photography’s Helmut Newton exhibit with Cindy Crawford and hubby Rande Gerber. Crawford was one of photographer Newton’s gorgeous, naked subjects and we seem to keep the same schedule when it gets hot and steamy outside (and inside, in this case). It’s an eye-popping exhibit of the late photographer’s work—strong and beautiful portraits of models and rich chicks with and without their duds.
I know it’s summer (everyone is on vacation) but I did expect to see a few more of his famous subjects at the first big museum showing of his work. I was, however, delighted to see: Daryl Hannah, Rashida Jones, Sharon Osbourne, James Caan, Matthew Rolston, Mandy Moore, China Chow, MOCA’s Jeffrey Deitch and (drum roll please) producer Robert Evans. Evans makes an appearance in one of the documentaries that play in the space and he is his same quotable self. I always feel there’s a slot to put quarters in him somewhere and then he just spits out story after story in that wonderful baritone. Helmut Newton: White Women • Sleepless Nights • Big Nudes is a fun, sleek show encompassing the '70s, '80s and '90s (sigh—at least they didn’t call it a retrospective) and is worth a look—admission is free. I was once a party at Evan’s Bel Air pad where folks shimmied out of their clothes and went skinny-dipping in the pool (I’m sure it has happened more than once at his house). Alas, the only nudes at this party were on the walls.
