L.A.’s Frontier: Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

Although the 153,075-acre Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) was established in 1978, it’s still surprising to see rangers wearing the iconic hats you might associate with Yosemite, not Los Angeles. This combination of federal, state, and county lands from the Hollywood Hills into Ventura County has protected some of the world’s most expensive (and environmentally sensitive) real estate from development. L.A. is park poor, but because of the SMMNRA, the natural world is never far away.
